about

Turn Up the Quiet is Kimba and Ryan’s fourth studio album, and an ode to sweet songs of longing, missives to the moon and changing seasons, and an honest rendering of the voice and guitar, without distractions or high-tech studio wizardry.

Almost the entire album was recorded live, without the use of booths or overdubs, and this challenging task has produced a collection of heartfelt ballads, suffused with the larger histories that follow each of these tunes, and the challenge of holding fast to the music amidst Kimba and Ryan’s own personal backdrop of covid-era change, domestic bliss and drudgery, and their commitment to the heart of each song.

This album spans over a decade of creative process – gathering rare standards, turning them over and over for many a long year, seeing which ones stuck through the challenges of a world tour with children in tow, long periods of isolation, and rapid personal change.

The influences for this album span time periods and genres, from the early vocalese of King Pleasure to the navel-gazing of Sufjan Stevens, however, the main focus in grappling with and recording these songs was to return these songs to their original melodic and harmonic shape and form, as the bebop era shifted the focus on these songs away from the story arc contained within each one. Kimba and Ryan lovingly attune their performance back to the heart of the song and filter it through the connection these two musicians have shared for over 25 years of love and music.

Sensitively recorded and mixed at the charming Park Orchards Studio by Evan Lorden (Mojo Juju, Sugar Fed Leopards) and mastered by the legendary Lachlan Carrick (Gotye, C.W Stoneking, Baz Luhrmann), Turn up the quiet is an invitation to turn inwards to places of reflection, yearning, and imagination.
